The Church at Worstead Norfolk
Worstead Church

If you want to venture out from Bacton you'll not have to travel far to reach lots of interesting towns and villages, each with its own church, local public-house - full of real Norfolk characters! - and unique charm. Some are rich in history, like the small town of Worstead 3 miles south of North Walsham, once an important centre of the woollen trade and the origin of the cloth called 'worstead'. It has a square with attractive Georgian or Queen Anne houses, and the mediaeval church of St. Mary - considered to he one of the finest in East Anglia. Today, the traditions of the weaving industry are promoted by a Weavers' Guild and visitors can once again observe the weaving of fine cloth In this town.

While Worstead was the weaving centre, it was in neighbouring North Walsham that the manufactured goods were sold. Visitors can easily recognise the place by Its 16th Century Market Cross, a structure consisting of three diminishing domed roofs and supported by sturdy wooden pillars. The town is also famed by Paston Grammar School, the school to which one Horatio Nelson later, Lord Nelson - went to as a boy. And about a mile south of the town there is a reminder of the town's bloody past In the form of a cross commemorating the Peasant's Revolt of 1381.
